The iconic piano theme from The Exorcist horror film, a tense, repeating melody people use to build suspense, dread and an eerie mood in videos.

This is the chilling piano intro known as the theme from The Exorcist, built on a simple repeating pattern in an unusual time signature that never quite settles. The notes are clean, cold and mechanical, circling back on themselves with growing unease instead of a normal melody. There is no voice, no jump scare and no loud hit, just that steady, hypnotic ticking of piano keys. Heard for even a few seconds, it immediately signals that something is wrong, possessed or quietly dangerous, which is why viewers tense up before anything scary has actually happened on screen.

The music comes from Mike Oldfield's 1973 progressive rock album Tubular Bells, whose opening piano section was used as the main theme for William Friedkin's 1973 horror film The Exorcist. The film's huge success attached those few repeating notes permanently to demonic possession in popular culture. Clips of the theme later spread through Halloween playlists, horror trailers and meme edits, where a short burst is enough to reference the movie without showing it. Its association has lasted for decades because the melody is instantly recognisable and unsettling even out of context.

What is the Exorcist theme song?

The theme is the opening piano section of Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, released in 1973. Its repeating, unsettled piano pattern was chosen for The Exorcist and became the sound most people associate with the film.

Why is this sound so creepy?

The piano pattern loops in an odd time signature and never resolves like a normal tune. That mechanical repetition over a quiet background creates a feeling of something wrong and inescapable, even before any scary image appears.

How do creators use this sound?

Creators place it under calm footage to signal hidden danger, possession or a dark twist. It works best with slow zooms, empty rooms and Halloween edits, where the familiar melody lets the audience feel the horror reference instantly.
