The classic opening theme from The Exorcist, with eerie tones that build dread before a scare. Creators use it to set a horror mood in videos and pranks.

This is the haunting introduction associated with The Exorcist, opening with sparse, dissonant notes that feel cold and off-balance rather than loud. A slow, creeping melody hangs in the air, creating a sense of something unseen approaching long before anything happens on screen. Listeners recognise it instantly as a signal for dread, possession and supernatural horror, even without seeing the film. The tension comes from restraint, not jump scares, which makes it linger and unsettle viewers, priming them to expect the worst in the seconds that follow.

The Exorcist, released in 1973, became one of the most famous horror films ever made, and its opening music quickly became shorthand for demonic possession and supernatural dread. The piano-led theme, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, was already striking on its own, but its use over the film's unsettling opening gave it a lasting association with horror. Since then it has been reused in parodies, Halloween compilations, trailers and reaction videos, because audiences recognise the first notes instantly and understand the tone before a single word is spoken.
