The haunting piano theme from The Exorcist (1973), instantly recognisable as horror's scariest sound. Use it to build dread before a jump scare.

It opens with a slow, sparse piano figure that repeats almost hypnotically, each note hanging in silence before the next one falls. The melody is simple and childlike on the surface, but its minor-key turns and hollow, bell-like tone make it feel deeply unsettling, as if something is watching from just out of frame. As the pattern repeats, tension creeps in without any loud crash or scream, which is why it works so well on its own. Listeners recognise it instantly and feel uneasy before anything scary has even happened.

The theme comes from The Exorcist, the 1973 horror film about a young girl possessed by a demon, where Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells plays over the opening and becomes inseparable from the movie. Its sparse piano introduction, taken from the start of Oldfield's 1973 album of the same name, gave horror a sound that was quiet rather than loud. Decades of Halloween playlists, parodies, and horror references have kept it instantly recognisable, so a few notes alone are enough to signal that something supernatural is about to happen.
