About this sound

This iconic lyric signals incoming betrayal, classic internet trolling, and ironic endings, commonly used in reaction edits right before a twist, fail, or joke lands unexpectedly.

This sound is a brief meme clip centered on the recognizable phrase “you know the rules and so do I,” usually delivered as a setup before an abrupt cut or joke payoff. Even in a very short form, it instantly signals a Rickroll-style bait because so many viewers know the lyric pattern by heart. The effect is playful and self-aware: the audience realizes what is coming almost immediately, which makes the clip useful for fake reveals, ironic transitions and edits where the humor comes from recognition rather than surprise alone.

The phrase comes from Rick Astley’s 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up,” which became the basis of the long-running Rickroll meme online. Short clips using only “you know the rules and so do I” spread because the line is enough for viewers to recognize the joke before the chorus even starts. It is still popular in bait edits, remix memes and fakeout videos because the reference is immediate, widely understood and easy to fit into very short content.
