About this sound

This short voice clip captures Simon Kaggwa Njala asking “Why are you gay?” in a Ugandan TV interview, often used for abrupt, awkward meme reactions.

This brief meme clip isolates Simon Kaggwa Njala’s direct question, “Why are you gay?” from an interview with activist Pepe Julian Onziema. The delivery is serious and unusually blunt, with a quick upward inflection that makes the line feel both confrontational and surreal outside its original context. In edits, the sudden question can turn an ordinary reveal, questionable choice, or awkward interaction into a punchline. Because the audio lasts barely over a second, it creates an immediate jolt and leaves viewers to fill in the implied accusation.

The line comes from a 2012 Ugandan television interview on the program Morning Breeze, where host Simon Kaggwa Njala questioned LGBTQ rights activist Pepe Julian Onziema. The blunt wording and tense exchange were widely excerpted into reaction videos, remixes, and image-based memes across social media. Its compact setup remains recognizable because it instantly introduces awkward suspicion or an absurdly personal challenge without needing extra context. Shortened audio cuts later made the question especially easy to insert into rapid comedy edits.
