About this sound

The drawn-out “Ha, gay” reaction from Ken Jeong as Ben Chang in Community, used in memes and video edits to mock an awkward comment or sudden reveal.

This reaction clip captures Ben Chang delivering a sharp laugh followed by an exaggerated, drawn-out “gay.” Ken Jeong’s abrupt timing and deliberately overdone delivery turn the short line into a blunt comedic interruption. The audio begins with an attention-grabbing burst, then stretches the final word for maximum awkwardness. In meme edits, it creates an immediate tonal break, making an innocent comment, questionable choice, or unexpected reveal seem ridiculous. Its recognizable cadence works best when the audience can anticipate the punchline just before it lands.

The clip comes from the television comedy Community and is performed by Ken Jeong as the unpredictable Ben Chang. Its exaggerated delivery escaped the original scene and became a widely reused reaction meme across short videos, compilations, streams, and message threads. Creators kept returning to it because the opening laugh is instantly recognizable and the prolonged final word leaves room for visual reactions. The line is often used ironically, although its wording can sound insulting when directed at real people rather than fictional situations.
