About this sound

The classic ba dum tss rimshot sting used after jokes and awkward punchlines. This short comedy sound effect appears in memes, edits and reaction clips.

This clip is the familiar ba dum tss rimshot, the quick drum-and-cymbal flourish people associate with a punchline landing badly or sarcastically. It starts with a short tom or snare-like hit pattern and ends with a crisp cymbal crash, creating that instantly recognisable comedy button. In videos, it adds a playful sting that tells the viewer a joke just happened, whether it was genuinely funny, painfully cheesy or meant to make the moment feel extra awkward. That split-second cue can completely change how a line or visual gag reads.

The ba dum tss sound is the classic rimshot associated with stand-up comedy, variety shows and late-night joke timing. It comes from a live drummer accenting a punchline with a quick drum hit and cymbal crash, a convention that predates internet memes by decades. Online, the phrase spread as text, GIF captions and sound clips used after bad puns, anti-jokes and intentionally cringe edits. It is still popular because viewers instantly understand the cue, much like a dramatic sting or the Michael Rosen: Noice reaction.
