About this sound

The “Why are you gay?” audio comes from a viral Ugandan television interview and is used in memes, reaction edits, and awkward-question videos.

This clip captures interviewer Simon Kaggwa Njala asking, “Why are you gay?” during a tense Ugandan television interview. His deliberate delivery, brief pause, and blunt phrasing turn the question into an instantly recognizable reaction. In edits, the line creates sudden awkwardness, disbelief, or comic confrontation, especially when someone has made a questionable choice. The short spoken setup also works as a punchline because viewers can anticipate the uncomfortable exchange even when the original interview is not shown. Its clipped broadcast audio gives the meme a direct, deadpan quality.

The phrase comes from a 2012 episode of Morning Breeze, a Ugandan television program, in which presenter Simon Kaggwa Njala interviewed LGBTQ activist Pepe Julian Onziema. A video excerpt circulated internationally and later became a reaction-meme template, with the opening question often isolated from the longer conversation. The contrast between the host’s blunt wording and Onziema’s composed response made the exchange highly remixable. It remains common in short videos and chat edits as shorthand for an intrusive, unexpectedly direct question.
