About this sound

A short shocked "nani" reaction clip from anime meme culture, used when something confusing, sudden or impossible happens in a video.

This sound is a brief, punchy "nani?" reaction, the Japanese word for "what," delivered with surprise and disbelief. It has the sharp, dramatic tone people associate with anime reaction moments, so it lands fast even in very short edits. Creators use it to underline a plot twist, a strange decision, or a clip that makes no sense at first glance. The effect on a viewer is immediate: it adds confusion, humor, and that split-second feeling of stopping to process what just happened.

"Nani" is the Japanese word for "what," and online it became a staple reaction sound through anime clips, compilations, and meme edits shared across YouTube, TikTok, and Discord. Many users search it as "noni" because of mishearing or phonetic spelling, but the meme usually refers to the dramatic surprised delivery of "nani?" Its popularity comes from how quickly it communicates confusion and disbelief. It remains common in short-form edits because the sound is instantly recognizable even when the source scene is not.
