About this sound

The nostalgic ICQ notification turned meme sound symbolizes mistakes, tech fails, and awkward moments, often used when something goes wrong unexpectedly.

This sound is the famous ICQ notification clip: a short digital alert followed by a voice saying "uh oh." It has a very late-90s, early-internet feel, instantly bringing back old desktop chat rooms and message popups. The mix of a simple electronic cue and the spoken phrase makes it both funny and memorable. In videos, it usually signals an unexpected DM, a chaotic group chat moment, or a retro tech reference. Even people who never used ICQ often recognize it as a classic instant messaging sound.

The ICQ "uh oh" alert comes from ICQ, one of the earliest widely used instant messaging platforms, launched in 1996. The notification became one of the most recognizable chat sounds of the early internet era, especially on home PCs in the late 1990s and 2000s. It spread beyond the app through meme compilations, nostalgia videos, and retro tech edits. Today it is still used as a shorthand for incoming messages, much like a Discord notification for a newer generation.
