About this sound

The classic ICQ message alert, known for its short “uh-oh” voice clip. People use it in edits, memes and chat jokes to signal an incoming message.

This sound is the famous ICQ notification that plays a quick, unmistakable “uh-oh” when a message arrives. It is very short, clean and instantly recognisable to anyone who used early internet chat clients. The clipped voice gives it a playful but slightly alarming feel, which is why it works so well in memes and reaction edits. Even for people who never used ICQ, the sound reads as a retro incoming-message alert, making a scene feel suddenly online, awkward or nostalgically digital.

The ICQ alert comes from ICQ, one of the best-known instant messaging platforms of the early internet era, first launched in 1996. Its “uh-oh” incoming message sound became a signature part of using the app and was widely recognised during the late 1990s and 2000s. Long after ICQ faded from everyday use, the sound stayed popular in meme edits and nostalgic tech posts because it instantly signals online chat, early desktop culture and the feeling of an unexpected message popping up.
