About this sound

The classic ba dum tss joke sting, a short drum rimshot used after punchlines, awkward moments and obvious fails in memes, edits and reaction clips.

This sound is the familiar ba dum tss rimshot: a quick snare-and-cymbal sting people associate with cheesy punchlines and groan-worthy jokes. It lands right after a line or visual moment to signal, "that was the joke," often making the scene feel even more awkward on purpose. Because it is short, punchy and instantly recognisable, creators use it to underline dad jokes, sarcastic captions, bad puns and low-effort punchlines. The effect is playful but slightly mocking, which is why it works so well in meme edits and reaction posts.

This sound is the classic comic rimshot, a drum sting long associated with stand-up, variety shows and old-school joke timing. Online, it became a default reaction sound for punchlines that are intentionally corny, awkward or painfully obvious. Its staying power comes from how fast the meaning is understood: viewers instantly read it as a joke marker. In meme culture, it often fills the same reaction role as vine boom sound or a dramatic dun dun dunnnnnnnn cue, but with a lighter, more comedic tone.

What is the Ba Dum Tss sound?

It is a classic comic rimshot, usually a quick snare hit followed by a cymbal crash. People use it after jokes, puns or awkward lines to underline the punchline in a deliberately cheesy way.

Where does the Ba Dum Tss rimshot come from?

The rimshot predates internet memes and has long been used in live comedy, variety performance and stage drumming to mark punchlines. Online clips turned that familiar joke sting into a standard meme reaction sound.

When should I use this sound in an edit?

Use it right after a spoken punchline, a bad pun, or a visual joke that needs an extra wink. It works best when there is a tiny pause before the hit, so the audience can register the joke first.
