About this sound

The classic Windows 98 startup chime from Microsoft's operating system, often used in retro PC edits, tech memes, and nostalgic computer videos.

This sound is the familiar startup chime that played when Windows 98 finished loading on a PC. It begins with a soft, airy swell and resolves into a clean, bright synth-like tone that feels calm, futuristic, and unmistakably late 1990s. Because it is short and instantly recognisable, it gives videos an immediate retro computer vibe. Creators use it to signal booting up, old-school tech moments, internet nostalgia, or a punchline about aging hardware and the early home computer era.

The Windows 98 startup sound comes from Microsoft's Windows 98 operating system, released in 1998. It became widely recognisable because millions of home and school computers played it during boot. Long after Windows 98 disappeared from daily use, the chime stayed alive in retro tech culture, archive videos, and nostalgia posts. Online, people use it as a quick audio cue for old PCs, early internet memories, and jokes about slow systems starting up, often alongside classic computer sounds like a Discord Notification for contrast.
