About this sound

The Wilhelm Scream is a famous stock movie yell heard during falls and action scenes, often used in memes, edits, and videos for comic drama.

The Wilhelm Scream is a long, theatrical cry associated with movie characters falling, being thrown, or taking a dramatic hit. Its strained, descending yell is instantly recognizable to film fans and often turns an otherwise serious action moment into an inside joke. This extended version gives the scream extra room to play out, making it useful for exaggerated falls, chaotic mishaps, and deliberately overdone reactions. Because audiences recognize its distinctive pitch and delivery, the sound can add both cinematic nostalgia and sudden comedy to a visual.

The Wilhelm Scream originated as a stock sound recorded for the 1951 film Distant Drums. It later gained its familiar name from Private Wilhelm, a character who cries out in the 1953 Western The Charge at Feather River. Sound designer Ben Burtt helped popularize the recording by placing it in major films, including Star Wars. Its repeated appearances became an industry joke, and online editors later embraced it as a recognizable scream meme for falls, explosions, and exaggerated defeats.
