About this sound

A short clip of the famous Gotye lyric from Somebody That I Used to Know, widely used in memes and reaction edits for dramatic breakups or betrayals.

This sound is the instantly recognisable line “you didn’t have to cut me off” from Gotye’s hit song Somebody That I Used to Know. In short meme clips, it lands like a dramatic, slightly over-the-top emotional punchline. The vocal delivery is sharp and wounded, so it works well when a video shows rejection, being ignored, or someone acting cold for no reason. Even outside breakup jokes, creators use it whenever a moment feels unnecessarily harsh, awkward, or personal, because the lyric says exactly what the viewer is already thinking.

This clip comes from “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye featuring Kimbra, released in 2011. The lyric became a long-running internet reaction sound because its phrasing is instantly memorable and easy to drop onto awkward or hurtful moments. It spread through short-form edits, lip-syncs, and caption memes, especially when a video shows someone being iced out or dismissed. Its staying power comes from the mix of real emotion and melodrama, which lets it work as both a sincere and ironic punchline.
