About this sound

A short voice clip of Talking Ben answering the phone in the Talking Ben the Dog app, used in memes to mimic an awkward, blunt, or reluctant pickup.

This brief clip captures Talking Ben picking up his telephone and giving his characteristically flat response. The low, gruff voice and abrupt delivery make the moment feel dismissive, as though Ben is already unimpressed by whoever called. Because the audio lasts less than half a second, it works as a sharp reaction rather than a complete exchange. Viewers immediately recognize the deadpan attitude, which can turn an ordinary phone scene, unexpected message, or uncomfortable conversation into a compact joke with a deliberately awkward pause.

The clip comes from Talking Ben the Dog, a mobile character app released by Outfit7 in 2011. Ben is a retired chemistry professor whose interactions include responding to users and answering a telephone. Short recordings of his blunt voice became useful reaction material because they are easy to place over calls, chats, and confrontational edits. The character later gained renewed online attention through gameplay videos, livestreams, and social media memes, keeping the phone-answer moment recognizable long after the app first appeared.
