About this sound

The classic sad trombone sound effect with a descending wah-wah-wah fail horn. Commonly used in memes, edits and videos to underline an obvious flop.

This sound is the classic sad trombone cue, a descending brass-style wah-wah-wah that instantly signals failure, disappointment or an awkward miss. It has a droopy, exaggerated tone that feels both comedic and a little mean, which is why it works so well after bad jokes, failed attempts and embarrassing moments. Even when it is played for only a second or two, viewers immediately understand the punchline. The effect lands fast, turning a simple mistake into a more dramatic and recognizable meme moment without needing any extra explanation.

The sad trombone, often called a fail horn, is a long-running comedy sound effect used to mark defeat, embarrassment or anticlimax. It became especially widespread in internet memes, short-form edits and reaction videos as an easy audio punchline for obvious mistakes. Its staying power comes from how instantly recognizable the descending brass phrase is, even to viewers who do not know any formal source. Online, it fills a similar role to a SpongeBob Fail cue or a quick vine boom, but with a more openly sarcastic tone.
