About this sound

The classic sad trombone sting, also known as the wah-wah fail sound effect. People use it in memes, videos and streams after mistakes or bad jokes.

This clip is the familiar sad trombone cue: a short descending brass phrase that goes wah-wah-wah and instantly signals failure, disappointment or an awkward miss. It has a cartoony, old-school comedy feel, so even a tiny mistake suddenly feels bigger and funnier. Creators drop it after bad puns, failed attempts, unlucky moments and anticlimactic reveals because the sound tells the audience exactly how to react without needing any extra setup. It is quick, recognizable and easy to use as a punchline at the end of a gag.

The sad trombone, often called the wah-wah sound, is a long-running comedy effect that predates internet memes and was widely used in stage, radio and TV humor. Online, it became a go-to reaction sound for fails, cringe moments and jokes that do not land. Its staying power comes from how instantly understandable it is: a few notes communicate disappointment better than a full spoken reaction, so editors still use it across short videos, streams and soundboards.
