About this sound

A short death sound effect from Quake, used in gaming edits, fail clips and retro shooter memes when a character gets eliminated or instantly loses.

This clip is a brief death sound from Quake, the classic first person shooter known for its dark, gritty audio. It hits fast, with a sharp vocalized impact that suggests a player or enemy being taken out in an instant. Because it is so short, it works as a punchline without interrupting the pacing of a video. The sound gives a retro PC game feel and usually makes a moment seem more dramatic, abrupt or comically doomed, especially when paired with a sudden mistake, wipeout or bad decision on screen.

This sound is associated with Quake, the landmark PC shooter released by id Software in 1996. Its audio style became memorable alongside the game’s fast movement, heavy atmosphere and early online multiplayer culture. Short Quake death sounds still appear in modern edits because they instantly signal defeat while adding a distinct retro gaming texture. Online, creators often use them in the same spirit as other classic game stingers such as Fatality, especially for abrupt losses, botched plays and throwback shooter references.
