About this sound

The piercing Nazgûl scream from The Lord of the Rings films, used in edits, memes and reaction clips to signal danger, panic or a sudden creepy reveal.

This sound is the harsh, piercing shriek associated with the Nazgûl, also called Ringwraiths, in The Lord of the Rings. It cuts through a scene with an eerie, high, almost animal-like wail that feels threatening and instantly raises tension. Even in a very short clip, it gives viewers the sense that something dark is approaching or that a character is in serious danger. Creators use it when they want a dramatic horror sting, a fantasy villain cue, or an over-the-top reaction to something unsettling.

The Nazgûl scream comes from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, where the Ringwraiths are heard unleashing their signature shriek during chase and battle scenes. Online, the sound spread through fantasy edits, reaction videos, and meme clips because it is instantly recognizable and communicates dread in a fraction of a second. It remains popular because even people who do not know the exact scene still read it as a warning sound, much like sudden suspense in modern short-form editing.
