About this sound

The short losing cue from Super Mario games, used in edits, memes and streams to signal failure, bad timing or an instant drop from confidence.

This clip is the familiar Mario power down sound, a very short descending game cue associated with losing a power-up, taking a hit or suddenly slipping from a winning moment. It has a quick, unmistakable retro feel that viewers instantly connect with failure in a funny, low-stakes way. Because it is so brief, it lands fast and does not interrupt dialogue or pacing. In videos, it adds a clean punchline for mistakes, misplays, missed chances and any moment where confidence collapses in a split second.

The Mario power down cue comes from the long-running Super Mario game series and is part of the franchise's instantly recognizable retro audio language. Over time, creators began using it outside gameplay as a universal shorthand for failure, losing momentum or being brought down a level. Its staying power comes from how short and readable it is: even people who have not played the games often understand the joke immediately. It remains common in gaming compilations, reaction edits and simple meme punchlines.
