About this sound

A short clip of Sarah McLachlan's emotional song "Angel," widely used in memes, sad edits and ironic fake-tragedy videos when something goes terribly wrong.

This sound is a brief excerpt from the chorus of Sarah McLachlan's song "Angel," centered on the line "in the arms of an angel." It has a soft, mournful piano-and-vocal feel that instantly signals sadness, sympathy or mock seriousness. In memes, that emotional weight gets used both sincerely and ironically, often after a fail, a loss or an overdramatic moment. Even in a six-second clip, the sound shifts a viewer into funeral-mode, which is exactly why it lands so well in joke edits and reaction posts.

The sound comes from "Angel," a song by Sarah McLachlan released in 1997. Online, short clips of the chorus spread as a shorthand for grief, pity and exaggerated sadness, especially in fail compilations and ironic memorial-style edits. Its meme life was strengthened by the public association between the song and emotional animal welfare advertising, which made the opening lines instantly recognizable to a broad audience. Creators still use it because the mood is clear within seconds and the contrast makes small mishaps feel absurdly tragic.
