About this sound

A short clip of the “how absurd to swallow a bird” lyric from the classic old lady nursery song, used to punctuate bizarre choices and silly mishaps.

This brief musical clip features the rhyming line “how absurd to swallow a bird,” associated with the cumulative children’s song about an old lady swallowing increasingly unlikely animals. Its playful rhyme and ridiculous image give the audio a light, comic tone. The line works as a reaction to strange decisions, implausible explanations, or moments that escalate beyond reason. Because the clip is only a few seconds long, it delivers the joke quickly without interrupting the pace of a video, making the absurdity feel like an immediate punchline.

The phrase comes from the traditional cumulative children’s song commonly known as “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.” Each verse introduces another animal and repeats earlier events, with the bird verse using “absurd” as its comic rhyme. The song has appeared in recordings, books, classrooms, and children’s performances for generations. Short excerpts remain useful online because the familiar rhyme communicates escalating nonsense immediately, even when separated from the complete song. It is often applied to surreal edits, questionable choices, and bird-related jokes.
