About this sound

A short clip of the opening line from Simon & Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence, used in memes and fail edits to underline awkward, sad or defeated moments.

This sound is the familiar opening phrase, "Hello darkness, my old friend," taken from the start of The Sound of Silence. In meme edits, that brief line works like an instant mood switch: everything suddenly feels more tragic, awkward or hilariously hopeless. The slow, solemn delivery makes even small mistakes seem dramatic, which is why people drop it after failed stunts, embarrassing gameplay, bad luck or painfully quiet moments. It is simple, recognizable and effective because viewers immediately understand the joke without needing any extra setup.

This clip comes from the opening of The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel, first released in the 1960s. Online, the line became a reaction staple because its somber tone instantly exaggerates failure, disappointment and social awkwardness. It spread widely through short meme edits, compilation videos and gaming posts where a sudden cut to the lyric makes a moment feel comically bleak. It still stays popular because the reference is widely recognized and the joke reads almost immediately, even in very short clips.
