About this sound

The classic dial-up internet sound effect captures a modem handshake over a phone line, used in retro tech edits, nostalgia videos, and connection jokes.

This sound captures the familiar sequence of tones, beeps, static, and electronic chirps produced when a dial-up modem connects through a telephone line. The rapidly changing noises represent two modems detecting each other, testing the connection, and agreeing on communication settings. Its mechanical rhythm creates immediate suspense because listeners remember waiting to see whether the connection would succeed. Today, the lengthy handshake often adds retro atmosphere, signals outdated technology, or turns a slow-loading moment into a joke about the early internet era.

Dial-up modems connected computers to internet services through ordinary telephone lines. During setup, the modem converted data into audible signals and performed a handshake with another modem, producing the recognizable sequence of dialing, beeping, static, and high-pitched tones. The noise became closely associated with home internet access during the 1990s and early 2000s. Although broadband largely replaced dial-up, creators still use the sound as instant shorthand for obsolete computers, slow connections, technological nostalgia, and comically delayed thinking.

Use Cases

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dial-up internet sound?

It is the audible handshake made by modems communicating over a telephone line. The dialing, beeps, static, and changing tones occur as the devices establish contact and negotiate connection settings.

Why did dial-up modems make these noises?

Dial-up modems transmitted digital information as audio signals across telephone networks. The distinctive startup sequence let two modems identify each other, test line conditions, and agree on settings before exchanging data.

How is the dial-up sound used in videos?

Creators use it to establish a 1990s computer setting, exaggerate slow loading, introduce retro technology, or joke that someone is taking a long time to understand or respond.
