About this sound

The classic modem connection sound became a meme audio for throwback tech humor and slow internet jokes. It exaggerates outdated technology moments.

This sound is the classic AOL dial-up connection sequence: a phone-line dial tone, beeps, static bursts, and the scratchy modem handshake that slowly builds into a connected session. It instantly signals slow internet, blocked phone lines, and the early home web era. The noisy, mechanical pattern feels awkward and suspenseful at first, then funny once the full screeching kicks in. In videos, it works as a shorthand for outdated tech, patience being tested, or any moment that needs a strong burst of Y2K computer nostalgia.

The AOL dial-up sound comes from the era when America Online helped millions of people get online through telephone-line modems in the 1990s and early 2000s. That screeching modem handshake became one of the most recognizable tech sounds of the period. It spread far beyond AOL itself because many home internet users heard similar connection noises every day. Today it still shows up in memes, retro edits, and comedy clips whenever creators want to evoke early internet culture or exaggerated slowness.
