About this sound

This cricket chirping sound is a short recording of nighttime insect calls, used online after awkward jokes, failed reveals, or moments met with silence.

This clip features several seconds of steady cricket chirps, resembling the familiar sound of insects calling in a quiet outdoor setting at night. Online, that empty nighttime atmosphere has become an audio shorthand for an audience giving no response. The repeated chirping creates an intentionally uncomfortable pause, making a weak joke, confusing comment, or underwhelming announcement feel even more awkward. Its moderate length leaves enough room for viewers to absorb the silence before the scene moves on, giving reaction edits a dry, understated punchline.

Criquet is the French word for cricket, matching the insect chirps heard in this clip. No specific film, television episode, or original recording source is confirmed. Cricket audio became a familiar comedy device through its association with quiet nighttime scenes and the expression “hearing crickets,” meaning that nobody responded. Short-form video creators continue using the effect because viewers immediately understand the contrast between an expected reaction and complete silence, especially after unsuccessful jokes, unanswered questions, and anticlimactic announcements.

What is the Criquet sound?

It is a short clip of repeated cricket chirps, similar to insects calling outdoors at night. In comedy edits, the sound represents an awkward silence or complete lack of response.

Why are cricket sounds used after bad jokes?

Cricket chirping suggests that a room is so quiet that only insects can be heard. Editors use that association to show that a joke failed or nobody knew how to respond.

How should the cricket chirping sound be used?
