About this sound

A short meme mashup that cuts from Bastille's "Pompeii" lyric into the Emotional Damage sting, used for ironic fails, sad reveals and overdramatic edits.

This clip is a quick meme edit that starts with the familiar "but if you close your eyes" line from Bastille's "Pompeii" and then snaps into the sharp Emotional Damage punchline. The contrast makes it funny right away: a dramatic, reflective lyric gets interrupted by a blunt reaction sound. Creators use it when a moment looks sentimental for a split second before turning embarrassing, disappointing or painfully awkward. It works especially well in reaction clips, gaming fails and joke reveal edits where the payoff needs to feel sudden and exaggerated.

This sound is built from two widely recognised meme elements: the "but if you close your eyes" lyric from Bastille's 2013 song "Pompeii" and the Emotional Damage catchphrase popularised online by comedian Steven He. Mashups combining emotional music with a hard reaction punchline spread across short-form video edits because the timing creates an immediate joke. It remains popular for fail compilations, ironic heartbreak posts and bait-and-switch reveals where creators want a dramatic setup followed by a sudden comedic collapse.
