About this sound

Bernard Herrmann’s ominous Cape Fear theme from the 1962 thriller builds dread with a stalking orchestral motif, ideal for suspenseful edits and reveals.

This clip features Bernard Herrmann’s main theme for Cape Fear, the 1962 psychological thriller. Its forceful orchestral writing advances with a dark, repeating motif, heavy low brass, and sharp accents that suggest an approaching threat. Rather than offering a conventional melody, the music sustains tension and creates the feeling that danger is steadily closing in. The excerpt gives videos an unmistakably cinematic sense of menace, making an ordinary entrance, slow reveal, or unsettling discovery feel like a scene from a classic suspense film.

Bernard Herrmann composed the score for the original Cape Fear, released in 1962 and starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. The main theme became closely associated with the film’s atmosphere of pursuit and intimidation. For Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake, Elmer Bernstein adapted material from Herrmann’s original score, introducing its threatening musical identity to another generation of viewers. The theme remains useful in online edits because its insistent orchestral pattern communicates danger immediately, even when removed from the film’s narrative context.
