A short clip of the when you try your best but you don't succeed lyric from Coldplay's Fix You, used in memes about failed attempts and disappointment.

This clip captures the opening lyric of Coldplay’s Fix You: “When you try your best, but you don’t succeed.” The subdued singing and gentle musical backing create an immediate feeling of disappointment, sympathy, and emotional defeat. In meme edits, the line often follows a confident attempt that ends badly, turning a sincere lyric into a humorous reaction. Its brief length makes the audio especially effective as a punchline, while the familiar melody lets viewers recognize the mood before the failed result has fully registered.

The lyric comes from Fix You by the British band Coldplay, released in 2005 on the album X&Y. Its opening verse and gradual emotional build made the song widely recognizable beyond its original release. Online creators later isolated the first line for reaction videos, failed-attempt montages, and self-deprecating edits. It often fills the same comedic role as the Sad Violin meme, but retains the sincere, consoling tone of the original song. That contrast between heartfelt music and minor everyday failure keeps the clip popular.
