The classic ICQ incoming file notification from the 1990s messaging app, a short retro alert used in nostalgia videos, tech memes and streams.

This is the short notification chime ICQ played when a file started arriving, a bright, slightly electronic alert that cuts through a quiet room in just over a second. It sounds unmistakably late-nineties, like a dial-up era computer announcing something new, and it instantly triggers recognition in anyone who spent time on early instant messaging. In a video it works as a tiny time machine, turning a modern screen into a nostalgic desktop moment and making viewers smile at how simple and direct old software alerts used to be.

ICQ launched in 1996 as one of the first widely used instant messaging programs, and its short, distinctive notification sounds became part of everyday computer life for millions of early internet users. As files, photos and documents arrived through the program, its alerts signalled something new without needing a pop-up window. Years after ICQ faded from mainstream use, those sounds survived on soundboards and in retro videos, where they now work as instant shorthand for nineties internet culture and dial-up era computing.
