The guttural 'ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah' yell from Disturbed's 'Down with the Sickness', used as a reaction sound effect for shocking fails and over-the-top meme clips.

It opens with a throaty grunt that snaps into the famous staccato burst — ooh, wah, ah, ah, ah — each syllable punched out like a drum hit, gritty and theatrical. Lifted from the bridge of Disturbed's 'Down with the Sickness', the yell carries raw nu-metal aggression even on its own. Hearing it triggers instant recognition and a jolt of comic adrenaline, priming viewers for something wild, painful or gloriously over the top. It is less a scream of pain than a battle cry, which is why it lands as hype rather than horror.

The yell comes from the bridge of 'Down with the Sickness', the breakout single from Disturbed's 2000 debut album The Sickness, where vocalist David Draiman's improvised staccato vocal became the band's signature. It echoed through the nu-metal era before finding a second life online, where meme pages and reaction channels repurposed it as a hype sting. Today it sits alongside reaction staples like the oh my god, wow gasp and the DAMN shout, dropped into fail compilations and gaming montages whenever a moment turns gloriously unhinged.

What is the Sickness yell sound?

It is the staccato 'ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah' vocal from the bridge of Disturbed's 2000 single 'Down with the Sickness', performed by vocalist David Draiman and instantly recognisable from nu-metal radio.

Why did the Sickness yell become a meme?

Its theatrical, drum-like rhythm makes it a perfect hype sting, so meme pages and reaction channels began dropping it over fails, wipeouts and plot twists, where the burst of mock aggression lands as comedy rather than anger.

Where should I place the Sickness yell in an edit?

Place it on the exact frame a shocking moment begins, such as a wipeout or reveal, and let the final syllable hit the impact. Keep it short and avoid playing it over dialogue or repeatedly in one video.
