The opening line from Mad World, sung in a slow, haunting voice over soft piano. Creators use it for lonely, nostalgic or dramatic moments in edits and memes.

This short clip captures the first line of Mad World, delivered in a quiet, weary vocal that sits over gentle piano notes. The singing is slow and almost whispered, with long pauses that make the words feel heavy and isolated. Because the melody is so familiar, listeners recognise it instantly, even before the rest of the song begins. In a video it creates an immediate sense of loneliness, nostalgia or quiet dread, turning an ordinary scene into something sadder and more reflective. It works best as an opening moment, setting a melancholic mood before a punchline, a reveal or a sudden change in tone.

Mad World was originally written by Tears for Fears and released in 1982, but the version most people recognise is Gary Jules slow piano cover from 2001, recorded for the film Donnie Darko. Its stripped-back arrangement and weary vocal made the song feel far darker than the original, and it later became a staple of sad edits, reaction videos and TikTok montages. The opening line is especially popular because it instantly signals isolation and nostalgia, even on its own, which is why creators keep returning to it years later.

What song is "All around me are familiar faces" from?

It is the opening line of Mad World. Most clips use Gary Jules's slow 2001 piano cover, recorded for Donnie Darko, although the song was originally written by Tears for Fears in 1982.

Why is this sound so popular in edits?

Because the line instantly creates a lonely, nostalgic mood without needing any context. Its slow vocal and simple piano make ordinary footage feel sadder, which works well for montages, flashbacks and dramatic reveals.

How should I use this sound in a video?

Use it at the start of a sad or reflective scene, letting the line play in full before the main moment. It works best over slow footage or still images, rather than fast cuts or loud background music.
