The Wilhelm scream sound effect is the classic stock recording heard when a movie character falls or gets hit, now used in memes, edits and reaction videos.

This is the Wilhelm scream, a short high pitched male yell that drops in pitch as if the person is falling away. It lasts just over a second, starting with a sharp cry and trailing off quickly, which makes the pain feel exaggerated rather than realistic. Because the scream is so recognisable and over the top, it turns a serious fall, hit or explosion into an instant joke. Viewers hear it and immediately understand the moment is meant to be funny, even when the scene on screen looks dramatic or dangerous.

The Wilhelm scream was first recorded for the 1951 western Distant Drums and got its name from Private Wilhelm, a character shot in the 1953 film The Charge at Feather River. For years it was a stock studio effect reused in many westerns and war films. Sound designer Ben Burtt rediscovered it and used it in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, which helped turn it into an in joke among editors. It is now heard in hundreds of films, games and online videos.

Where did the Wilhelm scream come from?

It was first used in the 1951 film Distant Drums and named after Private Wilhelm in the 1953 film The Charge at Feather River. It later became famous after being reused in Star Wars, Indiana Jones and many other movies.

Why do people use the Wilhelm scream in memes?

People use it because the scream is instantly recognisable and sounds exaggerated, so it signals that a fall or hit is meant to be funny. Dropping it into gaming clips, fails and edits adds a classic movie joke in just over a second.
