The Wilhelm scream sound effect is the classic stock recording heard when a movie character falls or gets hit, now used in memes, edits and reaction videos.

This is the Wilhelm scream, a short high pitched male yell that drops in pitch as if the person is falling away. It lasts just over a second, starting with a sharp cry and trailing off quickly, which makes the pain feel exaggerated rather than realistic. Because the scream is so recognisable and over the top, it turns a serious fall, hit or explosion into an instant joke. Viewers hear it and immediately understand the moment is meant to be funny, even when the scene on screen looks dramatic or dangerous.

The Wilhelm scream was first recorded for the 1951 western Distant Drums and got its name from Private Wilhelm, a character shot in the 1953 film The Charge at Feather River. For years it was a stock studio effect reused in many westerns and war films. Sound designer Ben Burtt rediscovered it and used it in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, which helped turn it into an in joke among editors. It is now heard in hundreds of films, games and online videos.
