About this sound

The viral “What are those?” meme sound from Brandon Moore’s 2015 video, used to roast unusual shoes, questionable outfits, and embarrassing reveals.

This short meme clip captures Brandon Moore loudly asking, “What are those?” while directing attention toward someone’s shoes. His stretched, emphatic delivery turns a simple question into an instant fashion roast. The sound works because viewers can anticipate the punchline before the footwear or outfit is revealed, creating a quick burst of secondhand embarrassment. Creators commonly use it over awkward shoe choices, strange clothing, cheap costumes, unexpected character designs, or any visual detail that deserves playful ridicule rather than serious criticism.

The clip originated in a 2015 video recorded by Brandon Moore, who aimed the camera at a police officer’s footwear and shouted the now-famous question. It circulated widely across Instagram, Vine, and other social platforms, becoming one of the defining short-form memes of that period. The phrase soon moved beyond shoes and became a general reaction to strange clothing or design choices. Its exaggerated delivery remains recognizable in compilations alongside other clips such as the RUN Vine sound and BRUH reaction.
