About this sound

A classic vinyl record scratch sound effect with a sharp, dragging stop. Creators use it for sudden interruptions, mistakes, and awkward reveals.

This sound captures the rough scrape of a stylus moving abruptly across a vinyl record. It begins with a sharp frictional burst, followed by a longer dragging scratch that creates the impression of music being stopped without warning. The exaggerated texture immediately disrupts the rhythm of a scene, making it effective for drawing attention to a mistake, surprise, or uncomfortable change in mood. Its recognizable analog character can turn an ordinary pause into a comic interruption or give a reveal the feeling of an unexpected setback.

A vinyl scratch is produced when a record stylus moves across a groove while the disc is manipulated or halted. Turntable scratching became closely associated with hip-hop DJ culture during the late 1970s and developed into a performance technique with many variations. The abrupt record-stop version later became a familiar cue in film, television, radio, and online videos. It remains widely used because listeners instantly understand it as a break in momentum, especially when a confident moment collapses into surprise, embarrassment, or failure.
