About this sound

The familiar VATS activation sound from Fallout, used in edits, game memes and reaction clips to signal slow-motion targeting or sudden focus.

This clip is the short electronic cue associated with VATS in Fallout, the series' assisted targeting mode. It has a clean, gamey sci-fi tone that instantly suggests time slowing down and a target being locked in. Because players recognize it so quickly, the sound works well as a punchy way to highlight a crucial moment, a threat, or an overdramatic decision. In memes and gameplay edits, it gives ordinary footage a tactical, zoomed-in feeling and makes the scene look more serious than it really is.

VATS stands for Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, a signature gameplay feature in the Fallout series. The sound is closely associated with entering that combat mode, where time slows and body parts can be targeted. As Fallout clips, mods, and memes spread online, the VATS cue became useful outside the games too. Creators now use it as a shorthand for sudden focus, tactical thinking, or pretending a simple moment has life-or-death stakes, much like the Inception Button is used to exaggerate drama.
