About this sound

The THX Deep Note is the swelling audio logo heard before select films and home videos, often used in edits to create cinematic scale and suspense.

This sound is the THX Deep Note, a dramatic synthesized audio logo that begins with a dense cluster of shifting tones. The pitches gradually spread, rise, and converge into a powerful sustained chord with a deep bass presence. Its slow build creates tension before the final resonance delivers an overwhelming, cinematic payoff. Because many viewers associate it with theater presentations and home video intros, the sound can instantly make an ordinary scene feel enormous, serious, or deliberately overproduced. It also works as a nostalgic reference for audiences familiar with classic movie playback systems.

The Deep Note was created by audio engineer James A. Moorer for THX and introduced in 1983 with the original THX theatrical trailer. Its evolving cluster of synthesized voices became closely associated with cinema sound demonstrations, later appearing before films and on home video releases. Online, creators adopted the recognizable buildup for remixes, bass tests, nostalgic posts, and dramatic meme edits. It remains popular because the transition from unstable tones to a massive resolved chord is immediately recognizable, even when used outside a theater setting.
