About this sound

The creepy croaking noise from The Grudge horror films, famous for tense jump scares, cursed scenes and unsettling meme edits.

This clip captures the signature throat-rattle associated with The Grudge, a harsh, broken croak that instantly signals something unnatural is nearby. It is not a loud scream so much as a dry, choking, inhuman vocal noise, which makes it more disturbing the longer it hangs in silence. Viewers recognise it as a horror warning sound, often tied to sudden appearances, cursed imagery and slow-building dread. Even out of context, it creates a tense, skin-crawling feeling that works well in scary edits and parody horror moments.

This sound is most closely associated with the Grudge horror franchise, especially the unsettling vocal rattle linked to the ghostly figure in Ju-On and its English-language remake The Grudge. Online, it spread because the noise is instantly recognisable even without visuals and can make almost any clip feel haunted. Creators still use it in horror edits, prank videos and ironic meme posts because a single short croak is enough to signal dread, suspense and an incoming scare.
