About this sound

The game over tune from Super Mario Sunshine, used in gaming edits, fails and retro meme clips when a run ends badly or a challenge goes wrong.

This sound is the game over music cue from Super Mario Sunshine, the GameCube Mario platformer. It plays as a short, melancholy end-of-run jingle that signals failure without sounding harsh or scary. The clip has that bright Nintendo game audio style, but the descending melody gives it a deflated, slightly sad finish. In videos, it instantly tells viewers that someone lost, wiped out, or made a mistake, which makes it a natural punchline for failed attempts, bad luck moments, and comedic endings.

This clip comes from Super Mario Sunshine, a Nintendo platform game released for the GameCube in 2002. The game over theme became familiar to players through repeated failed missions and lost lives, then carried over into fan uploads and gaming edits online. It remains useful because the melody is instantly readable as a classic video game failure cue while still sounding light and nostalgic. Compared with harsher fail sounds like the ROBLOX oof, this one gives a softer, more old-school losing moment.
