About this sound

The classic Sonic the Hedgehog jump sound from Sega's games, used in gameplay edits, memes, and videos to punctuate a quick leap or sudden movement.

This short sound effect recreates the bright, springy cue heard when Sonic jumps in his video games. Lasting less than a second, it has a quick rising tone that immediately suggests bouncing, spinning, and fast movement. Its distinctive arcade-style character makes even an ordinary hop or sudden camera move feel like part of a platform game. Viewers familiar with Sonic recognize it almost instantly, while others can still read it as a playful signal for launching upward, clearing an obstacle, or beginning a rapid action sequence.

The effect is associated with Sonic’s jump in the original Sonic the Hedgehog, released by Sega for the Genesis in 1991. It remained recognizable through later games and became part of the series’ broader audio identity. As gameplay videos, animations, remixes, and meme edits spread online, creators began applying the cue to jumps outside the games. It is often compared with the Mario Jump because both sounds quickly communicate classic platforming action, yet Sonic’s cue carries its own fast, spring-loaded character.
