About this sound

Otis delivers his rambling situation speech in the 2002 French comedy Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, often used to frame absurd monologues.

This extended dialogue clip features Otis, the scribe, reflecting on whether any situation is truly good or bad. His answer quickly becomes a wandering, philosophical monologue filled with unexpected turns and cheerful sincerity. Delivered in French by Édouard Baer, the speech contrasts grand ideas about life, love, and human encounters with the comic setting of ancient Egypt. Its relaxed pacing and improvised quality make the scene feel increasingly absurd, leaving viewers amused by how confidently Otis avoids giving a direct answer.

The clip comes from the 2002 French film Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, directed by Alain Chabat. Édouard Baer plays Otis, a scribe working on Cleopatra’s ambitious palace project. His response about good and bad situations became one of the film’s most quoted scenes, especially among French-speaking audiences. The monologue later circulated through video edits, reaction posts, and social media references because its elaborate answer bears little relation to the original question, making it useful shorthand for charming, confident rambling.
