About this sound

A short sad trumpet-style fail sound, often called the sad trombone or wah wah wah. People use it in memes and edits for jokes, losses and awkward moments.

This clip is the classic descending brass fail cue people play after a bad joke, mistake or embarrassing moment. It has a droopy, comic sound with a quick wah-wah feel that instantly tells viewers something went wrong. Even though many people call it a sad trumpet, the effect is closer to a sad trombone sting used for comedic disappointment. In videos, streams and group chats, it works as an immediate punchline that turns small failures into something playful rather than dramatic.

This sound is widely known online as the sad trombone, a comic brass sting associated with failure and disappointment. The phrase and effect have roots in older live comedy and vaudeville-style humor, and the clip spread further through radio, TV gags, memes and short-form edits. Today it remains popular because the meaning is instantly clear: something flopped. In meme culture it fills a similar reaction role to the shocked sound, but with a more sarcastic, loser-at-the-buzzer feel.
