About this sound

A short Rick Roll clip from Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up, used in bait-and-switch memes, prank edits and surprise punchline reveals.

This sound is a clipped section of the classic Rick Roll, built from Rick Astley's 1987 hit Never Gonna Give You Up. It usually features the instantly recognizable vocal and upbeat pop production that signal the joke within a second or two. The effect is playful and knowingly cheesy, turning a normal setup into a bait-and-switch reveal. Because so many people recognize it right away, the sound works as a fast visual punchline in memes, fake-outs, prank posts and any edit where you want the audience to realize they have been tricked.

The Rick Roll comes from Rick Astley's song Never Gonna Give You Up, released in 1987. As an internet prank, it became widely known in the mid-2000s when links promising something else redirected people to the music video instead. The joke spread across forums, video platforms and social media because the song is instantly recognizable and harmlessly absurd in unexpected contexts. It still gets used because a very short clip is enough for most viewers to immediately understand the setup and the punchline.
