About this sound

A political speech clip of Matteo Renzi saying his political career would be over if he lost the referendum, used for defeat and game-over edits.

This clip captures Italian politician Matteo Renzi addressing senators and repeating a promise previously made to the press: if he lost the referendum, he would consider his political experience finished. His formal, deliberate delivery gives the recording a decisive and unusually dramatic tone. The phrase “game over” summarizes the finality listeners associate with the statement, making the audio effective as an ironic ending for failed plans, political commentary, embarrassing losses, or moments when someone confidently stakes everything on a single outcome.

The recording comes from a public political statement by Matteo Renzi concerning Italy’s 2016 constitutional referendum. Renzi publicly linked the referendum’s result to his own political future, and he resigned as prime minister after voters rejected the proposed reforms. Online, excerpts from such statements are often reframed as “game over” reactions because their solemn wording fits losses, reversals, and failed predictions. This clip remains useful in Italian political memes and retrospective edits about promises carrying unexpectedly serious consequences.
