About this sound

The Q*bert swearing sound is the arcade character's burst of synthesized gibberish from the 1982 game, used for fails, frustration, and comic reactions.

This short clip captures Q*bert's famous burst of scrambled, synthesized speech from the classic arcade game. The rapid electronic babble resembles an angry curse without forming intelligible words, matching the character's comic frustration when something goes wrong. Its sharp, strange delivery instantly gives a mistake or setback an old-school video game feel. Because the outburst sounds agitated but remains nonspecific, it works as a playful substitute for actual profanity and adds absurd energy without interrupting a scene with a long spoken line.

Q*bert originated in Gottlieb's 1982 arcade game of the same name. The game used synthesized speech to give its orange protagonist an unusual electronic voice, including frustrated gibberish associated with mistakes and collisions. Q*bert's speech balloon also displayed symbols suggesting swearing rather than spelling a real curse. The character's distinctive voice became part of the game's identity and later remained recognizable through retro gaming culture, gameplay videos, remixes, and reaction edits that use the outburst as a clean, humorous expression of anger.
