About this sound

The classic Pac-Man death jingle from the arcade game, used in memes, edits and fail moments when a player loses or something goes wrong.

This clip is the unmistakable Pac-Man death sound, the short descending arcade jingle that plays when Pac-Man gets caught by a ghost and loses a life. It has a bright, old-school electronic tone that instantly signals failure, defeat or a sudden mistake. Even though it lasts less than two seconds, it carries a lot of gaming nostalgia and lands quickly in edits. Viewers recognize it as a retro game over cue, so it works well when a joke needs an immediate sense of loss, collapse or bad timing.

The Pac-Man death sound comes from Namco's Pac-Man arcade game, released in 1980. It plays when Pac-Man is caught by a ghost and loses a life, making it one of the most recognizable failure cues in video game history. Because Pac-Man became a global hit, the jingle spread far beyond arcades and is still used online as a retro shorthand for losing, messing up or getting instantly shut down, much like a buzzer in a modern meme edit.
