About this sound

The old Steam chat notification is a brief message alert from Valve's gaming client, used in nostalgic edits, livestreams, and gaming videos.

This sound is the short notification heard when a chat message arrived through an older version of Steam. Lasting less than half a second, it delivers a compact electronic alert that is easy to recognize without interrupting dialogue or gameplay. Its quick, clean tone can instantly evoke memories of desktop gaming, late-night conversations, and messages from online friends. In videos, the clip works as an efficient audio cue for an incoming message, an unexpected interruption, or a nostalgic reference to the earlier look and feel of Steam chat.

This notification comes from an older version of Steam, Valve's digital game platform and desktop client. Players heard it as an alert for chat activity, making the brief tone closely associated with PC gaming and conversations between Steam friends. As the client interface and its sounds changed over time, recordings of the earlier alert continued circulating in nostalgic videos, streams, and sound collections. It remains useful because viewers can recognize its messaging function immediately, much like a Discord notification, while its older tone evokes a particular era of online gaming.
