About this sound

The familiar NS announcement chime used on Dutch trains and stations, often added to memes, edits and skits to mimic public transport audio.

This clip is the short two-note NS chime heard before train announcements in the Netherlands. It has a clean, bright ding-dong tone that instantly suggests a station platform, departure board or onboard message is about to follow. Because the sound is brief and widely recognisable, it works as a comic cue for awkward pauses, official-sounding interruptions or travel jokes. In edits, it can make an ordinary moment feel suddenly formal, public and slightly tense, especially when paired with captions or a fake announcement voice.

This sound is known online as the NS announcement chime, the brief tone associated with Nederlandse Spoorwegen train and station messages in the Netherlands. It spread in memes, remixes and social posts because Dutch listeners recognise it immediately and expect an announcement right after it. Creators use it to set up parody station messages, jokes about delays and clips about commuting. Its staying power comes from that instant association with public transport, routine travel and the tense little pause before important information is delivered.
